## EFIKO LECTURE SERIES Tutorial 1A Subject: Mathematics Topic: Linear Equations Objective: To introduce students to Linear Equations.

Prerequisite for this tutorial: Arithmetic of positive and negative numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

Definition: Linear equation is a mathematical expression that has an equal sign (=) and contain ONLY ONE unknown (such as “x”, “y”, “a”, “b” etc.).

Let us take a closer look at the expression 3 + 5

If we add 3 and 5 together (two like terms), the answer is 8

This can be written mathematically as 3 + 5 = 8

If we replace the 3 with say x, the expression above becomes x + 5 = 8

The expression x + 5 = 8 is an equation. Solving this equation means finding the value of x which we know from above is 3.

The unknown (x above) can be in different position. Thus the equation x + 5 = 8 is the same as the equation 5 + x = 8.

Other examples:

x – 7 = 10

3x – 2 = 4

-2x – 7 + 5x = 12

Features of linear equations:

A linear equation has the following features: 1. There is only one unknown. Thus the equation x + 3 – y = 9 is not a linear equation (it contains two unknown x and y) 2. The unknown cannot have exponents (or powers): For example, x squared or x^2. Thus x^2 + 3 = 8 is not a linear equation. 3. The unknown cannot multiply or divide each other i.e. x*x, y/y, b*b*b etc. 4. The unknown cannot be found under a root sign i.e. vx Assignment 1: A. Which among the following is a not a linear equation: 1. 2x + 9 = 12 + 3x 2. x + 5 = 9 + y 3. 4m * 2m = 24 4. -5x – 7 = 12 + x 5. P^2 – 9 = 3p B. List five examples of linear equations.
